Belly Dance Conditioning and Technique Classes
with Renée Drellishak

Want to learn how to bellydance, refine your existing technique or just have fun while getting fit? Weekly, ongoing classes based on the Suhaila Salimpour bellydance format provide a great workout in a fun and challenging atmosphere. These mixed-level classes are suitable for dancers of all levels of experience (or no experience at all!) and all styles of belly dance. Classes include a conditioning warm-up, technique break downs and drills, finger cymbal patterns, dance movement, and mini-choreographies which utilize the move of the week. Come have fun, work out, and enhance your dance!

Classes begin the first week in January and are Thursdays from 8:15 - 9:30pm and Sundays from 11am - 12:15pm. Pre-registration is required. (When registering please specify which class you will be attending.) $70 for the six week session.

Bicycle Shimmy

I read on bellydance movements someone was asking about a bicycle shimmy and when i took your workshop at 3rd C, Shay taught the bicycle shimmy..or emphasized it. That was my first time hearing about the bicycle shimmy and fell in love with the move =)

Hi everyone,

Classes are starting up again this week, and I have added a Sunday session for those who found Sunday worked better and/or for people who want to practice their new skills twice a week! Class will be in the same location (ADI studio 2) from 11-12:30 on Sundays and will cover the same material as the Thursday class. Class cards purchased in the previous session will be good for this session's Thursday and Sunday classes. There will be no Sunday (or Thursday) class the week of Thanksgiving.

Students may drop in at any point in the session. These classes are suitable for dancers of all levels of experience (or no experience at all!) and all styles of belly dance. This Thursday, July 19th, inFusion Tribal will be kicking things up
with their usual flair at Capitol Club on Capitol Hill.

This will be the LAST Third Thursday at Capitol Club. That's
right...because we're moving to SATURDAYS!! Starting in August, we
will be moving from the Third Thursday slot we have had for four

If I may add one other fantastic piece of news: our favorite chef is
back!! Yes, they brought back the chef we knew and loved at Capitol
Club for years. The menu will be making some changes--some of our

they are still serving Casbahs!

The Mediterranean Fantasy Festival is THIS WEEKEND in West Seattle.
This is our largest local bellydance gathering of the year. inFusion
will be performing on the outdoor stage on Sunday at high noon, and
our student troupe, Nomaditude, will be performing Saturday at 4 on
the indoor stage. Both shows promise to be great!

Belly Dance Technique and Conditioning Classes
with Renée Drellishak

What: Classes will cover techniques and concepts from the Suhaila Salimpour format,* which focuses on the muscular origination of belly dance movements in order to facilitate isolations and ensure safe technique. Classes will include conditioning, technique breakdowns, drills, and finger cymbal patterns and will focus on a new movement each week. Students may drop in at any point in the session. These classes are suitable for dancers of all levels of experience and all styles of belly dance.

When: Sunday mornings beginning April 22 through June 3 (a second 6-week session will immediately follow.) Classes will begin on time. Please arrive 5 minutes early.

•Level I 10-11:10 am
Students will learn basic movement and timing breakdowns, and simple finger cymbal patterns. All students new to this format begin in Level I.

•Level II 11:15-12:30 pm
Students work on developing speed and stamina and learning more complex finger cymbal patterns. Students who come to Level I are welcome to stay for Level II for a killer workout!

Two of my fabulous performers need to sell their workshop spots in order to perform on la Big Stage! So they are selling their spots in this fabulous workshop. Can you help 'em out?

Time:2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Class Title: Powerful Pairs, Dynamic Duets: Turns and Passes
Instructor: Quinn Donovan (Gypsy Fire!)
Type of Class: ATS / Group Improvisation

To give you an idea of what a great workshop this is, my dear dancers were taking this for the SECOND time (they took it at another festival last year), because they loved the moves and concepts *so much* they wanted to get some more practice and refinement at it. If that isn't a glowing endorsement, I don't know what is!!

For the record, I have also taken this workshop, and know Quinn and crew to be fun, talented workshop instructors. And you do NOT have to attend with a friend/regular dance partner to get the benefits of this workshop. You can partner with another solo workshop attendee and take these concepts back to jam with your friends and troupe-mates at home. ;)

OMG!!! You guys got me hooked!! I was intrigued by Bhangra.....now...after taking your workshop at 3rd Coast.....I am going to become a junkie, I can feel it. That was the most awesome workshop I took the whole weekend. I had more fun in that workshop than all others combined!! You guys are 'da bomb!!! 3rd Coast Bhangra Workshop deets

For those of you who attended inFusion Tribal's Bhangra workshop, the handout is in the photo album in a large jpg format. Click on the page you want in the album, then choose "Full Size Image" from the top right hand menu. Then Ctrl-Click the image and choose "save" or "print" or however you want to do it. Make sure you "adjust image to fit media" when printing, or it may cut some of it off in the printing process. If you have any trouble accessing it this way, let me know and I will gladly e-mail the PDF to anyone asking. Just write me at info@mandalatribal.com for fastest response.

January Capitol Club Redux

Hello everyone!

Here's the latest scoop from inFusion Tribal!

Unfortunately:
Some of you may already know that Capitol Club underwent some sort of emergency closure last week, which pre-empted inFusion's usual Third Thursday performance. Even we didn't know until the dancers and all our friends and fans had arrived in full regalia! As of this year, new owners have taken over the Club, and they didn't have our phone number! Oops.

Fortunately:
They immediately re-booked us for the fourth Thursday.

Unfortunately:
Sadly, the technical difficulties continued, and the Club has been closed for an entire week!

They are doing some soft-openings tonight and tomorrow, and the *really* good news is that...

Yep, we're rockin' it again in '07 at the Capitol Club on Capitol Hill.
And this month marks the return of co-director Renee after a 3-month
trip to Germany. She is excited to dance again for you all--we missed
her so much! So come cheer her on and welcome her back home!

Join Renée Drellishak for Sunday morning belly dance classes!

What: Classes will cover techniques and concepts from Levels I and II of Suhaila Salimpour’s revolutionary belly dance format* and will include conditioning, technique breakdowns, and drills. Each class will end with a finger cymbal drill. Classes will rotate through a ten movement cycle, focusing on a new movement each week. Students may drop in at any point in the cycle. These classes are suitable for dancers of all levels of experience and all styles of belly dance.

When: Sunday mornings beginning January 28 through April 1. Classes will begin on time. Please arrive 5 minutes early to sign in.
• Level I 10-11:10 am Introduction to the Suhaila Salimpour Format. Students will learn basic movement and timing breakdowns, and simple finger cymbal patterns. All students new to this format begin in Level I.
• Level II 11:15-12:30 pm Continuing on in the Suhaila Salimpour Format. Students work on developing speed and stamina and learning more complex finger cymbal patterns. Students who come to Level I are welcome to stay for Level II for a killer workout!

What to bring: a towel, a water bottle, and finger cymbals. A light hip scarf is optional (no beads or coins) as is a yoga/exercise mat. Dress to sweat. No skirts or voluminous pantaloons, please.

Hello dear dancers!

Welcome to 2007! Whether your 2006 was stellar or "not so", the new year promises a "fresh start" for all your goals and wishes. When it
comes to your dance and physical well-being, I am at your service. So let's start things out right!

*~JUMP START YOUR SHIMMY~*

We've been away from dance for weeks. We ate a lot of food, drank a lot of wine, and now it's time to get our butts back in gear. These classes will get you back into the dancing mood, and prepare you for a fabulous 2007 of bellydancing.

These classes are pure drills. We will warm-up, jam and sweat, and then end with a gentle yoga cool-down. Now that's what I'm talkin' about! If you would like to bring a yoga mat, please feel free.

Classes to choose from:
60 minute Basics 1 level class (open to all, Mon, Jan 8) 90-minute
Basics Mixed level classes (open to all, Weds 10 & 17) 90-minute
Advanced Mixed Level (open to Basics II and Intermediate only, Mon, Jan
8).
If you're unsure of which class to take, feel free to ask.

Note that there are TWO Wednesday dates, and only ONE Monday night with
two classes. This is due to the MLK holiday, which has the community
center closed on the 15th.

This event just gets bigger and more exciting every year! We bust out
the snacks, turn down the lights, turn up the stereo, and boogie the
night away together. It's a great excuse to glam-up in costume, or
just come in whatever makes you feel like dancin'!

This is a potluck event, so please bring a snack or drink to share.
If your dish requires utensils, please bring a small supply. We will
provide cups, plates, and napkins. Alcohol is "officially" not
allowed, so please keep that in mind.

Everyone is welcome: friends, family & well-behaved little ones!
Bellydancers of any style, no matter who they study with or what they
study, will feel welcomed and appreciated here. This is not a "just
Sharon's class" or "only tribal dancers" gathering--this is a
community event to bring us together and celebrate this festive season!

For those who attend the Bhangra workshop on the 18th, we will be
throwing a few Bhangra tunes into the dance mix so you can jam with
your newfound skills!

... for welcoming me to your classes last night. I was blown away by the cooperative and welcoming atmosphere, the ass-kicking instruction (of course), and the caliber and attitude of the student dancers. That was seriously the best bunch of beginners I've ever seen!

As I already said to the eight zillion folks on the Tribal tribe, you gals have something truly magical going on. I am honored to have shared it for one sparkly, sweaty, hip-shakin' evening.

No Level I Suhaila Salimpour format class on Mother's Day, New Session, and Save the Dates!

Just a reminder that there will be no Level I Suhaila Salimpour format class this weekend, in honor of mothers everywhere!

You may have noticed I sneaked in a date for the next Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance workshop! Nadira will be hosting this next series of workshops while I am in Germany for the Fall (where I will, believe it or not, get to assist at several workshops with Suhaila!) Registration is NOT open yet, but here are the currently scheduled dates. Location, etc. TBA.

July 23
October 8
December 10

We are currently working on getting Suhaila herself here in February 2007 and will let you know further details when we have them.

Finally, a hearty Congratulations to both Nadira and Kitiera, who sweated through the Level II weeklong workshop last month and are both now Level II certified! Woo hoo!

Can I ask you a question? I suppose this is more for the director's but do you guys have any other dance exprience other then belly dance? How do you come up with your choregraphy? Could you break down what a typical class is like?

I am asking these questions to compare my troupe to others and see how other troupes are ran so to speak. :) :)

Thoughts about class...

Fun as always, and cool to finally met Sharon!. (and I so want a pair of those pants.) Couple of things I've thought about since last night.

1. Is it normal to find out you're not as coordinated on the non-dominant side of your body? I sucked on the left side, last night. It's nowhere near as controllable as my right yet.

2. Any idea where I can get a tank top with a normal neckline and arm holes for class? I've looked in several stores, and everything I find is cut down to "lordy how trashy" level. It's bad enough trying to find decent workout clothes that are both affordable *and* in my size. Call me crazy, but I'm a little too big to not need a bra, and I hate my bra straps showing. The only other thing I can think of is to buy a smaller shirt so it clings more and cut the sleeves off.

3. What was that one song you played? ROFL just kidding! Wonderful music all around, really. I love that you can do this to so many styles. I have this wierd desire to see if it's possible to bellydance to bluegrass, heheheeh.

4. I noticed you had a cute feather thing in your hair. What are some cool hair thingys if you have short hair? I have this problem that I have a lot of hair, but it's baby fine, so pins and things slide right out. Very frustrating The tiny butterfly clips work, though. Could I just be creative and glue feathers/flowers/etc to those?

Had a wonderful time, though, class was over before I felt done. :) Thanks so much!

The Capitol Club is my favorite restaurant in Seattle, but thus far I've never managed to come visit on a third Thursday (I'm from out of state and don't make up often)....however, I have a shot at making it there on May 18th, and I just wanted to doublecheck: will some of the Infusion contingent be dancing there this month? I'll bend over backwards to make it there if so!! :-)

MEMORIAL DAY BHANGRA FUSION WORKSHOP

By popular demand, Sharon and Renee of inFusion Tribal will be
teaching their Bhangra Fusion Improv stylings on Monday, May 29th.
This workshop has been the hit of the tribal belly dance community,
garnering kudos galore as one of the best workshops of 2005's Tribal
Fest and Tribal Quest Northwest, and will soon be taught at the 3rd
Coast Tribal Festival in Houston, TX! Why should everyone else get
all the fun? We want our Seattle sisters to join in the celebration
that Bhangra dance is all about!

What is Bhangra? It is a lively folk dance from the Punjab region of
India. Originally a male-dominated dance performed as part of the
annual harvest celebration, the music and dance has recently become
more mainstream, and fused with Western sensibilities. inFusion
Tribal has taken the movements and infectious energy of Bhangra and
blended it with tribal bellydance to create an exhilarating group
improvisational style. In the workshop we will learn a cross-section
of inFusion's Bhangra repertoire, and learn to dance together using
these new skills. All levels are welcome--no previous dance skills
required to get in on the fun! Dress code: Bare feet, dance clothes
you can move and sweat in (no skirts), and "adequate support" as there
is a fair amount of percussive movement and bouncing.

Be ready to jam, laugh, and SWEAT to infectious modern Bhangra beats!

Weekly Level I Classes in the Suhaila Salimpour Format!

Join Renée Drellishak, a certified Level II dancer in the Suhaila Salimpour Format, for Sunday morning belly dance classes!

What: Classes will cover Level I of Suhaila’s revolutionary belly dance format and will include conditioning, technique breakdowns, and drills. Each class will end with finger cymbal drills. Classes will rotate through a ten session cycle, focusing on a new movement category each week. Options will be provided for dancers who are moving toward or currently working on Level II.

When: Sunday mornings 10-11:30 am, beginning February 19.

What to bring: a towel, a water bottle, and finger cymbals. A light hip scarf is optional (no beads or coins) as is a yoga/exercise mat. Dress to sweat. No skirts!

just in case you didn't already know...The Infusionistas were as beautiful as ever at the Sat. eve show. They opened the show with so much energy that the whole audience couldn't help but be swept up with their ~twirling & whirling~ dancecapades! not too mention their groovey floorwork bit!

it was great to see you gals again, even if it was for only, like, a minute or two!

Be there at 7:30 sharp, as we will start the night off with performances by
Students of Troupe Hipnotica, Troupe Zamani, and inFusion Tribal Belly Dance! After the performances, the party continues with open dancing and potluck snacks. I am so excited that three Seattle tribal teachers--myself, Adriene, and Zanbaka--are bringing together our students/troupes for this fun community-building party. Come meet other tribal sisters, try some new moves and share yours with new friends during open dance. What a
great opportunity to get to know and "play" with other tribal dancers in our
city!

Everyone is welcome--friends, family, s.o.'s. All STYLES are welcome, as
always. Don't be shy. Come play with us--we don't bite! Bring anyone and everyone to celebrate the season together in tribal style: as a community! Bring a potluck snack and/or drink to share. If your food requires utensils or serving-ware, please bring some. Plates, napkins, and cups will be provided.

I always welcome pillows and rugs for floor seating. If you have any you're
willing to loan for the evening, please bring them.

Donations are gladly accepted to cover room rental costs. $5 minimum suggested *per attendee*. If you can give more, please do. Any excess funds after paying room rental costs go to charity! Please help us fund this wonderful holiday event!

**NOTE: Would anyone like to be in charge of a food donation collection for
charity this year? If so, please contact me right away.**

Any willing volunteers to help with set-up, please arrive at 7pm to help lay
down carpets, set up lights, and prepare snacks.
