Thoughts about class...

Fun as always, and cool to finally met Sharon!. (and I so want a pair of those pants.) Couple of things I've thought about since last night.

1. Is it normal to find out you're not as coordinated on the non-dominant side of your body? I sucked on the left side, last night. It's nowhere near as controllable as my right yet.

2. Any idea where I can get a tank top with a normal neckline and arm holes for class? I've looked in several stores, and everything I find is cut down to "lordy how trashy" level. It's bad enough trying to find decent workout clothes that are both affordable *and* in my size. Call me crazy, but I'm a little too big to not need a bra, and I hate my bra straps showing. The only other thing I can think of is to buy a smaller shirt so it clings more and cut the sleeves off.

3. What was that one song you played? ROFL just kidding! Wonderful music all around, really. I love that you can do this to so many styles. I have this wierd desire to see if it's possible to bellydance to bluegrass, heheheeh.

4. I noticed you had a cute feather thing in your hair. What are some cool hair thingys if you have short hair? I have this problem that I have a lot of hair, but it's baby fine, so pins and things slide right out. Very frustrating The tiny butterfly clips work, though. Could I just be creative and glue feathers/flowers/etc to those?

Had a wonderful time, though, class was over before I felt done. :) Thanks so much!

    Hey Meg,
So glad you enjoyed class! Here are my thoughts:

    1) YES! We call it our "gimpy side", and more often than not it is folks' left side. But this is why we drill both sides--even though our dancing is primarily right-centric, we don't want our left side tobe weak while our right gets overdeveloped. So we drill both to increase our strength, flexibility, and adaptability (you never know when you will want to use your left)

    2) I am not sure whatcha mean by "normal neckline"? I get tanks tops all over the place--Old Navy often sells cute tops at cheap prices. As for bra straps showing, I think if you want to wear tank tops, that is something you are going to have to get used to. I know I don't care if anyone's bra straps show, least of all my own. Who cares? We are women with breasts--we wear bras. As long as that is not ALL you are wearing in public, I don't think anyone will give a rat's patoot. ;)

And yes, cutting sleeves off of a tee thirt is an option. "Reconstructed clothing" is all the rage. I cut sleeves and neckholes all the time to make a shirt look the way I want.

    3) Glad you liked the music! I dance to what I like, and to what has the right tempo and feel for what we do. It's important to match the mood and personality of what you dance to the music you dance to. If your dance says "bluegrass", then go for it. Not sure it would work for tribal bellydance, but I don't know bluegrass that well. :P

    4) As for cut things in the hair, I JUST cut my hair short about two weeks ago now. And it is so filled with gunk at any time, ain't nothin' falling out of it. LOL I used to have longer, healthier, non-gunked hair, and things would fall out more easily. Choosing clips with teeth (alligator clips), instead of the smooth clips, are a good idea. I also wire flowers onto hair combs, which you can double back in your hair to get some staying power. Experimentation is the key! We all had a learning curve when it came to costuming, and we still experiment and learn new things and try new ideas out. So have fun with finding what appeals to you!

    See you next week!

1-Whew, it's not just me. lol. I've been trying to practice that side a little extra, but it's not as fast as the right, lol. At least this is normal.

2-Hehe, I moved here from Denver last august. I'm not used to showing much skin unless I wanted to either freeze it off or get vicious sunburns. I dunno, it just seems like tank tops aren't what I remember, they're made more like camisoles. I'll have to find an old navy and take a look. Meantime, cutoff will be fine for practice. I may splurge next payday and get one of those mesh insert leotards like you have linked on your website. I love blues and greens.

OH! By the way, I forgot to mention. My mom lives up in Vancouver, BC. If anyone drives up there, check out local thrift stores (they have Value Villages too). There's a quite large East Indian population up there, and thrift stores on the south side frequently have saris, salwar kameezes, scarves, and even pillowcases in everything from rayon to silk, and some with the shisha mirrors! I love it as a source of fabric. If one finds a gorgeous salwar and it's too little, think, it could be cut up and made into a belt or belt panel, or maybe a panel for the bottom of a choli top. Everytime I go up there there, I find stuff. Maybe if I get some good things, I'll bring them to class to share. Gotta love the exchange rates. LOL

3-I know it sounded odd, but some of the rhythms on the faster bluegrass made me feel like dancing. I tend to listen to rhythm, then melody. Hehe you gotta admit, it'd be unexpected.

4- I'm hitting the thrift store and fabric store after work today, see what I can play around with. I love making things and crafty goodness. I've always been of the mindset that if something ends up not working for me, I'll pass it along to someone who can get it to work or it looks better on. Recycling in the best way!

      See you Wed!

Thrift stores are our friends! LOL One day I plan to have a "thrift store tribal" workshop, where we will do costuming on a budget. Maybe this summer...

And yeah, I get up to the sari district at least once a year (used to be more like 3-4) to get fabrics for my costuming!

Oh my god, I so lucked out this past weekend! the Value Village over on 88th and 15th, not too far from ADI... Tons of Salwars, someone dumped an entire wardrobe. I got the greatest balloony pants in a gorgeous purple, AND a coin headdress that was only $6 cause they didn't know what it was! most of the salwars were size Medium, too skinny for me, but lots of colors. Also found decent sleeveless shirts on sale for $10 at fred meyers, AND figured out a way to make some fun hair clippies... eheheh OK, I went a little crazy. The fabric store behind the Blockbuster there on 85th & greenwood is closing, too, sale on everything... I got some tassel (sp) lengths at 20% per yard....

OH NO! Hancock Fabrics is closing?! *heart wrenching* It is hard enough to find good fabric stores around this town!

And wahoo on the salwar! That is how I got my last batch--same exact Value Village, too. Someone obviously dumped a bunch, and I snagged them. Slipped some for parts, sold others to friends. You should bring them to the next costume swap/open dance night!

The Pacific Fabrics location in Northgate is pretty good, I think. Sad about Hancocks though. :( I discovered the Northgate PF when I was looking for silk - not heavy, rough, scratchy window-hanging silk, just soft, "silky" silk! Apparently practically NO ONE carries it. They all kept referring me to someone else, sending me in circles until I wound up at PF in Northgate. (The other PF locations didn't carry it either.)

I'm going to have to spend more time in thrift stores, though, from the sound of it!

Ooo, I'll have to find that, where at northgate is it? I would be riding the bus, so getting there on the food court end.

its a few blocks east (i think) of Northgate, on the left side of the street before you hit Roosevelt.
Also- if you go up to Roosevelt and take a left, you go by Display and Costume-- they have a small selection of fabrics that you wont find at PF (like panne velvet) and other good costuming supplies.

i was just over in Bellevue and there was a huge Joann's in this one shopping center, i think it was called crossroads plaza or something....i didnt get to look through the whole store, but it was like a michaels and a fabric store in one. i know that is somewhat common around here, but where i am from, the fabric stores sucked :P

also Meg-- earlier you had mentioned sharon's pants...were you talking abou her Melodias or the Tribal booty pants? cause i have a pair of tribal pants i could sell you if thats what you were talking about...although i dont know what size youd need, i have a medium but they are too big.

Yeah - if you are at the Azteca end, heading east (away fro mthe freeway) down that street past the mall it is a few blocks down and on the left (past the Starbucks, before the turn for Display & Costume).

Yeah, Pacific Fabrics is my first stop usually, since I am about 2 minutes away from there. But Hancock always had the STAPLES, man. I used to get all my panne velvet there back when I was making stretch cholis. They have cotton and lining fabrics no one else carries, and they were cheaper, so I got most of my notions there.

I never liked JoAnn's. They are more craft centered, and while I do find some doosies in the fabric department that make me happy, the Shoreline and Ballard locations are messy, the staff knows next to nothing...and the next closest fabric store is...JoAnn's again! The super stores tend to be a little better in the trims and fabric departments, but Hancock was a must in my sewing life. Must get over there today...

Good idea! I'll hit it after work, then, since most of them would fit someone a bit more slender than I. Must be a family in the neighboorhood cleaning out their closets. Yeah, bummer, that puts NO fabric stores near me unless I go clear to Joanns in shoreline. pain when you ride the bus.
